Blood Runs Coal: The Yablonski Murders and the Battle for the United Mine Workers of America Customer Reviews

:
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Eric -- Absolute outstanding book! : Just finished reading this book. To say it was utterly phenomenal would be a gross understatement. It was absolutely spellbinding, as I was hardly ever able to put it down. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 17, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Robert Lamb -- MOVIE & TV PRODUCERS: Grab this book now! : (5 STARS) "Blood Runs Coal, is aptly named. A fight in 1969 for leadership of the coal miners' union (UMWA) reached a climax on New Year's Eve with the murder of Joseph "Jock" Jablonski and his wife and daughter in their Pennsylvania farmhouse. What led to the murders, how it was done, and how the guilty were brought to justice is masterfully laid out for readers by the author. Bradley has combined superb research of union politics with a great story of crime and punishment to come up with a book that defies the law of gravity: You can't put it down!" • 5.0 out of 5 stars from John Tarley -- Never a Dull Moment : Having grown up near the small town where these murders occurred, and with family steeped in coal mining and the UMWA, I found this book impossible to put down, reading about the dogged persistence of the prosecuting attorney while learning of the corruption and incompetence and heavy-handed tactics of the leaders in the UMWA during this time period. A remarkable story on many levels, vividly brought to life by Mark Bradley. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Tragic : It is a tragedy that Jock Yablonski is not as well known as others who gave their lives to change things for the better. This is a well-written, honest account of the greed and corruption unions were unfortunately under even as recently as the late sixties. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scott A. Lord -- Fascinating end to the 60’s : It was my 14th birthday when I read about the murders. It has stayed with me for all of these years and the book did not disappoint. Well researched and Mark Bradley keeps the story going. Did not know of the East Cleveland connection to all of this. ( Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Anne Mallery -- A Classic : In 1966 Truman Capote introduced readers to a new genre , the non-fiction novel. In Cold Blood captivated the reading market and was lauded for its thorough research, stimulating characters, and chilling plot. Blood Runs Coal is every bit the quality of Capote's work. It is especially timely since the story shows the outcome when greed and the grasping for power lead to evil. I'm sure it will become a classic. ( Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bobel -- Riveting story : This is a. fantastic book. It is the story of how democracy came to the United Mine Workers union. It is also a compelling read that I had trouble putting down. Five Stars. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Don -- Very good story on the murders of a Union Leader and family : A fast pace and well written story on such a tragic murder. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 20, 2021 )
